The full moon in September goes by many names, depending on the culture that bestows it. What every name has in common, however, is that it signals a significant event in the yearly cycle.
September is known as the Full Corn Moon, the Barley Moon and the Yellow Leaf Moon. These names are based on the Native American method of keeping track of the seasons.
While you may have also heard of the September Full moon being called the Harvest Moon, that is not the case this year. This romantic title falls on the full moon closest to the fall equinox; since the equinox is on September 22 this year, that means the October 1st full moon gets that honour.
The harvesting of grains such as barley and corn remind us that the cycles of life, birth - death and rebirth- are all held within each tiny kernel and each kernel is the product of the one before it ,going right back to the very first seed.
We too are the result of all those who came before us and so, this full moon, is a time to reflect on our connections to our ancestors as well as family issues of any kind.
Join me on September 2nd from 7:30 to 8:30 pm for a Full Corn Moon gathering and meditation on-line.
